About Us
Purrsncurls cattery is owned and operated by Sue and Verle Castle, in Central IL. We are a fairly small home based cattery, with just enough cats/kittens for us to comfortably care for. We have been raising cats (and other animals) for most of our lives, off and on. We helped establish the Ragamuffin breed of cat and raised them for about 5 years. Life then “got in the way” in the form of teen age children and their needs. We are now empty nesters who decided we missed the fun, joy, excitement and occasional disappointments of raising and showing cats. In trying to decide what kind of cats we wanted in our lives again we stumbled across the Curly Selkirk Rex. After much research we decided we wanted to devote some time and effort in the raising and showing of Selkirk Rex. With our previous experiences with raising animals we have developed a passion for color genetics. Verle even wrote an extensive Rabbit Color Genetics and Pedigree computer software program that he sold world wide. If you would like more information on the color genetics of cats, check out our links page.
To support our efforts, Verle works a real 40 hour job as a Nuclear Operator at Clinton Nuclear Power Plant in Central IL. Sue is a Polymer Clay Artist and homemaker.
Other activities we enjoy are spending time with our 5 lively grandchildren and their parents. Both families are in the AirForce, so we don’t see them as often as we would like. We travel quite a bit with a Keystone, Montana, Big Sky Fifth Wheel. We jokingly call it our “retirement condo on wheels” and we take some of our cats with us when we travel. The ones left at home are well cared for in our absence by Sue’s sister, Gail. We enjoy listening to audio books as we travel. We are on the computer a lot, Sue sews, reads, and crafts. We live on an acre of land out in the middle of a corn/bean field and spend a lot of time keeping the yard work done, as well as spending time enjoying our pool.
PURRSNCURLS CATTERY
Although for the most part our Selkirk Rex cats and Kittens are raised in our home and underfoot, we cannot honestly say our cats are never caged. For their own safety there are times they MUST be caged. Newborn kittens must be protected so they and their Mama’s are caged from birth to weaning although they are let out to play while we supervise. In the past, when we “never” used cages, we had queens without kittens or milk steal kittens (sometimes whole litters) from the mother and go hide them places like under the middle of our king size bed, where it was very difficult to safely retrieve them to return them to their mother. In the meantime, the mother was frantic and there were some rather nasty cat fights with these innocent kittens caught in the middle. There is too much hate and discontent when cats are allowed to run free in a cattery/breeding situation. We feel it would be irresponsible to allow our cats to run free all the time. The Kings MUST be kept separate from the Queens in order to preserve the accuracy of breeding records and pedigrees. Our younger cats are allowed free run of the main part of the house (as seen in the above photo), until they are of breeding age. Then the Queens are kept sequestered in the main Cattery (computer room) area, although they are allowed to run free there until and unless they are due to have kittens. The Kings have their own room and or cages as their temperament requires. Any cages used are very roomy and cleaned daily with fresh water and food provided. Any “caged cats” are also allowed time out with us for socialization and exercise, on a daily basis.
